baking cookies

Ever start a recipe and don’t have all the ingredients and say oh well, since the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon or 1/2 tablespoon isn’t so much and won’t make a difference? Well, learn from me! If it’s in the recipe, it’s supposed to be there, you can’t skip it! I recently did this with a simple sugar cookie recipe and didn’t put in the baking powder, and yes, you guessed it, the cookies came out terrible! So lesson learned, always go by the recipe! Other Dry Ingredients:

Flour: A versatile staple used in baking, thickening sauces, and breading food.

Sugar (white and brown):

Sweetening: Both white and brown sugars are fundamental sweeteners in cooking and baking. They enhance flavors, balance acidity, and provide sweetness to various dishes, from desserts to sauces and marinades.

Baking: Sugar is a critical ingredient in baking, where it contributes to the texture, moisture, and browning of baked goods. Brown sugar, with its molasses content, adds moisture and a slight caramel flavor to baked goods, creating a softer texture.

Versatility: Both sugars have versatile applications. White sugar is used in a wide range of recipes, while brown sugar, with its molasses flavor, adds depth to dishes like barbecue sauce, marinades, and certain desserts.

Preservation: Sugar has been historically used as a preserving agent in jams, jellies, and fruit preserves. It helps draw out moisture from the fruits, creating an inhospitable environment for bacteria to thrive.

Caramelization: Sugar plays a key role in caramelization, where it melts and browns to create a rich, complex flavor. This process enhances the taste of various dishes, including caramel sauces, candies, and even certain savory dishes.

Overall, sugar—both white and brown—serves as essential ingredient in the kitchen due to its sweetening properties, its impact on texture and flavor, and their versatility in various culinary applications.
